Our clients, a retired couple who spend much of the year in northern Europe, asked us to design a new Scandinavian-inspired garage apartment at the rear of their Heights property for use as their Houston pied-a-terre. Being accustomed to compact living quarters, they were comfortable with a small footprint, but wanted to maximize storage capacity and have space for entertaining.
The exterior of the two-story garage echoes the detailing of the bungalow at the front of the property. The 625-square-foot interior has sixteen-foot vaulted ceilings, an abundance of natural light, a loft space accessible from a pullout ladder for grandchildren to play when they’re over, and a wraparound deck accessible from both the living and dining areas.
